Do hospitals’ freebies undermine breast-feeding?

CHICAGO Jessica Ewald brought more than a new baby boy home when she gave birth earlier this year. Like many new moms, she got a hospital goody bag, with supplies including free infant formula and formula coupons.

“We gave it away the moment we came home because I said I’m not having that in our house,” Ewald said.

Ewald, 32, of Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., is the daughter of a breastfeeding activist who fought to get those goody bags out of hospitals.

Ramadan Recipes: Ful medames

As a result, we are providing you with a recipe for this appetizing dish of mashed fava beans in this last article of the Ramadan recipe series. Serve the dip with fresh tamiz, a thick Afghan bread that is very popular in Saudi Arabia as well.

Enjoy the last few days of Ramadan and Eid Mubarak!

1 can fava beans, rinsed and drained, or 1 cup dried fava beans, soaked overnight and drained

100 ml water

1 tbsp olive oil

1 yellow onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed

1 ½ tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

½ tsp ground cayenne pepper

½ tsp ground red chilli (optional)

1 large tomato, chopped

salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp tahini to taste (optional)

olive oil to taste

1 tbsp chopped fresh flat-leave parsley

lemon quarters, to serve

Parents in India bank on stem-cells, not the tooth fairy

For the past seven years, the Sethys had a faint but haunting feeling that they had let their daughter down. Danya, 10, is their only child and the Sethys strive for the best for her: She takes Japanese language, traditional Indian dance and keyboard lessons. They take her for checkups with Delhi’s best doctors; they have all kinds of insurance policies.

Weight gain during pregnancy – #Con11 Revisited

Last month Peter and I attended the Canadian Obesity Summit in Montreal.  We put up a lot of posts during the conference itself, but (amazingly) we had so much content that I actually decided to save some!  Over the next couple weeks I will be posting that content from time to time, including several podcasts that I think people will really enjoy (the first to come later this week).

Kickstarting your exercise routine when your motivation is in a slump.

No matter how committed you may be to your fitness, you will undoubtedly go through interruptions to your regular exercise routine due to illness, social engagements, travel, etc. Although I have been regularly active for a long time, I sometimes find these interruptions difficult to recover from especially if the interruption is a lengthy one. Fortunately, I’ve been using a simple solution that seems to jumpstart my activity after a period of extended inactivity.
