Three Sites That Make It Easier to Eat Green(ish)

All you city folk looking to green up your apartment, loft, fire escape, roof, alleyway or what-have-you: Things just got a little bit easier. The new Fire Escape Farms site “offers everything you need to turn even the smallest space into your own little farm,” from seed-starting kits to hanging planters to vertical garden gear. They also sell herb, veggie and flower seeds.

Last year, I was so proud of myself when I started a variety of herbs and greens from seed, in trays stacked under the table in the tiny living room of my tiny railroad apartment. I managed to sprout 24 basil plants -  and subsequently kill them all . We don’t all have green thumbs. If you love fresh herbs and produce but would rather let someone else do the growing, you may be more interested in checking out Foodstalk. The site is loaded with resources for finding farmer’s market, CSAs or locavore chefs across the U.S. There are also some gorgeously-photographed recipes and a downloadable guide to what’s in season now.

And if you prefer your green a little more gourmet, check out the newly-launched Gilt Taste. Yes, it’s the same Gilt that brings you online designer sample sales, only instead of haute couture, Gilt Taste deals in dairy and delicacies. Black truffle oil. fiddlehead ferns. Dried morels. Heirloom Lemon Matured White Wine Vinegar. Gilt Taste’s mission sounds laudable

Here you can connect with the farmers and artisans who make and grow products, discover where food comes from, learn how to prepare it for the best results and buy it with a single click.
