Sports drinks hit the wire today with a red light that their level of acidity is increasingly responsible for irreversible damage to teeth, especially amongst adolescents and younger adults, their predominant target market. The report is published in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry. “Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are ‘better’ for them than soda … Most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid.” The acidity levels are responsible for eroding tooth enamel, the hard, shiny, white outer surface of the teeth. FDA review favors first drug for HIV prevention

WASHINGTON A pill that has long been used to treat HIV has moved one step closer to becoming the first drug approved to prevent healthy people from becoming infected with the virus that causes AIDS.

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that Gilead Sciences’ Truvada appears to be safe and effective for HIV prevention. It concluded that taking the pill daily could spare patients “infection with a serious and lifethreatening illness that requires lifelong treatment.”

On Thursday a panel of FDA advisers will consider the review when it votes on whether Truvada should be approved as a preventative treatment for people who are at high risk of contracting HIV through sexual intercourse.

The nations up and coming Dick Clark and the voice of the New Years Eve countdown is expecting his second child with girlfriend Siri Pinter during the remainder of the 2012 year.

Carson Daly, who acquired his fame on MTV, is said to welcome the newest addition in early September.

Pinter shared the information on her blog, writing: “There is a baby in there … and that baby has been living there for about 5 and a half months already!”

Top doctor decries political ‘finger pointing’ over drug shortage

Politicians failed Canadians during the recent drug shortage by engaging in a blame game rather than finding real solutions to a life-threatening situation, the head of the Canadian Medical Association says.

John Haggie told the Commons health committee Thursday that the 76,000 doctors represented by his association and the Canadians they serve want to remind members of Parliament that they are the country’s leaders.

“At a time like this, when Canadians are facing what is nothing less than a national crisis, they look to you and your peers in legislatures across the country to exercise that leadership and live up to the trust that has been placed in you,” Dr. Haggi

The Path to Personalized Cancer Treatment

In the largest study of its kind, researchers have profiled genetic changes in cancer with drug sensitivity in order to develop a personalised approach to cancer treatments. The study is published in Nature on Thursday 29 March 2012.

The team uncovered hundreds of associations between mutations in cancer genes and sensitivity to anticancer drugs. One of the key responses the team found was that cells from a childhood bone cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma, respond to a drug that is currently used in the treatment of breast and ovarian cancers. The lowered toxicity of this treatment may mean it is a safer alternative therapy for children and young adults with this aggressive cancer.

Physicians Regional planning walk-in clinic to compete with NCH on Marco

The move sets the stage for competition with the NCH Healthcare System, which operates the Marco Healthcare Center and was at odds years ago with some Marco residents for not keeping its walk-in center open 24 hours.

Naples-based Health Management Associates, the parent company of Physicians Regional, opened the 100-bed hospital on Collier Boulevard in 2007 to serve residents and visitors of eastern Collier and Marco.

Several Marco residents active in civic affairs welcome a second hospital-operated walk-in center although none profess to know the location where Physicians Regional will open.

“We have secured a space on Marco Island in an optimal area,” said Taylor Hamilton, Physicians Regional spokeswoman.

Breast cancer risk may be higher with just one drink a day

Consuming as little as one drink a day or less may raise a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer, according to a new study published this week.

European researchers analyzed data from more than 100 studies that looked at the relationship between alcohol consumption and breast cancer and found that having up to one drink per day raised women’s risk for the disease by 4 percent. Three or more drinks per day increased risk by 40 to 50 percent.

“Women should not exceed one drink [per] day, and women at elevated risk for breast cancer should avoid alcohol or consume alcohol occasionally only,” concluded the authors, led by Helmut K.
