Screening For Diabetes Using Blood From Periodontal Disease

Oral blood samples drawn from deep pockets of periodontal inflammation can be used to measure hemoglobin A1c, an important gauge of a patient’s diabetes status, an NYU nursing-dental research team has found. Hemoglobin A1c blood glucose measures from oral blood compare well to those from finger-stick blood, the researchers say. The findings are from a study funded by an NYU CTSI (Clinical and Translational Science Institute) grant awarded to the research team last year. Hemoglobin A1c is widely used to test for diabetes. According to guidelines established by the American Diabetes Association, an A1c reading of 6.5 or more indicates a value in the diabetes range. Read full post…

Medicare puzzle: Big rise in artificial feet costs

WASHINGTON What’s wrong with this picture? Medicare’s bill for artificial feet rose nearly 60 percent in recent years, although foot and leg amputations due to diabetes continued a dramatic decline.

Medicare paid $94 million for artificial feet in 2010, according to research conducted for The Associated Press. That was nearly $35 million more than in 2005, even though in 2010, Medicare covered about 1,900 fewer such prostheses.

Artificial feet represent a tiny slice of the $550 billion program that covers health care for 49 million older and disabled people.

Getting caffeine fix as easy as taking deep breath

The product, called AeroShot, went on the market late last month in Massachusetts and New York, and is also available in France. A single unit costs $2.99 at convenience, mom-and-pop and online stores.

Biomedical engineering professor David Edwards said AeroShot is safe and does not contain common additives, like taurine, used to amplify the caffeine effect in common energy drinks. Each grey-and-yellow plastic canister contains 100 milligrams of caffeine powder, about the amount in a large cup of coffee, plus B vitamins.

But Democratic US Senator Charles Schumer of New York wants the US Food and Drug Administration to review AeroShot, saying he fears it will be used as a club drug so that young people can drink until they drop.

Yes, it all begins in the buildup to Thanksgiving and carries on until Christmas, where our sole responsibility is to spread good cheer and engage in goodwill.

Its a time when we become righteous human beings bearing a sensitivity like no other for this entire month and then move back to being our real selves as soon as the moment is past.

Don’t suffer a college hangover

This week, we move from the pre-pubescent years to the late teens and our transition from secondary school to college.

Sixth year is a time when some schools focus on Senior Cup rugby, while for others it’s the soccer or hockey cups. Schools rugby is very competitive and it brings great exposure to those who are crowned champions. This increases the pressure on coaches and rugby teams to bring success.

Many schools have now installed gyms on their premises and they have hired coaches to draw up training programmes and nutrition plans to help players fulfil their potential.

A concern for parents is whether resistance training will stunt the child’s growth.

Debbie Sebesta’s story draws attention to this rare but potentially fatal disease and raises a host of questions: Exactly what is flesh-eating disease? How does a person get it? How common is it? Flesh-eating disease, or necrotizing fasciitis, is a rare bacterial infection that can cause severe tissue death and damage by rapidly spreading through layers of skin and muscle. The scientists have created a pill that could change the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other digestive disorders. This medication will allow physicians to obtain accurate data about the state of the patients gastrointestinal tract.

The pill passes through the digestive tract analyzing the key moments (such as how fast it passes to the intestine, what the acidity, temperature and pressure are). All the collected information will be displayed on a portable computer with a monitor.

Europeans Ready for ‘Active Ageing’, New Survey Says

To mark the start of the 2012 European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity of Generations, the Commission presented a new Eurobarometer survey showing that 71% of Europeans are aware that Europe’s population is getting older, but only 42% are concerned about this development. This is in stark contrast with the perceptions of policy makers, who regard demographic ageing as a major challenge. For most citizens, people aged 55 years and older play a major role in key areas of society. Victoria’s heat health alert system will be put to the test again this summer, with January the month most likely to have the most days of extreme temperatures.

“Already this month, one statewide heat health alert has been issued to allow the health and aged care sector, emergency services and local government authorities to prepare for extreme temperatures,” Health Minister David Davis said.

Germ-Zapping Keyboard Approved for Hospitals

The FDA has given the nod to Kirkland, Washington, startup Viogard LLC to market its germ-repelling keyboard for hospitals and health clinics. The keyboard, developed by Microsoft veterans, is bathed in ultraviolet light to kill bugs from the MRSA bacteria to the flu.
